How the media creates hype to sway the American public toward liberalism
“I’m just born to do this.”
– Beto O’Rourke on running for president, Vanity Fair
The Beto Obsession has been building in the media this week ever since he announced his intention to run for president in 2020. Beto O’Rourke announced that he is running for president on the Democratic ticket and now he’s being marketed by the Left-wing media as America’s new hero.
The media frenzy began with a cover photo of Beto on Vanity Fair, looking very down-to-earth with his dog and pick up truck on a country road. The spread reminded us all of the Men’s Vogue cover photo of John Edwards back in 2007. We know by now that the main-stream media, including lifestyle magazines such as these, are propelled by the Left’s hatred for conservatism and their anger toward all things Trump.
The Vanity Fair piece goes back into Beto’s childhood, his relationship with his father, and his plans for the future of America, featuring photos of him with his kids playing guitar and flipping pancakes.
CNN, of course, has joined the frenzy, calling him a wild card, saying his charisma and charm is the reason behind his popularity. The problem is, most people haven’t even taken the time to decide whether or not they like him prior to the last 48 hours. If you didn’t know how you felt about Beto, don’t worry – CNN in Vanity Fair will help you decide.
The Left-driven media have created a Beto Obsession to attempt to sway the American people toward backing him for reasons I will be discussing in this post.
But first, I have to say that I would much rather be given a chance to choose for myself which candidates I like and which I don’t. As misinformed as many of my generation is on political issues, I believe we have one thing in common: we detest mediocrity and appreciate authenticity. I don’t see much authenticity from Beto. Here’s why.
Media is Partisan, Leftist
The left has created a Beto Obsession because they want to promote him as the next great presidential candidate who will be an advocate for the people. He’s just a regular guy who loves his kids, loves his dog, and wants to do what’s right for our nation. Right? Wrong. He lacks just enough substance and personal conviction to be the perfect pawn for their agenda.
I will admit that I had no opinion on Beto when I first heard that he was running for president. I saw his face on the cover of Vanity Fair and I saw a few clips of him smiling and talking about who he was. He seemed like a likable guy.
Then I heard him say immigration is “the best problem we could have,” and that our greatest crisis in America is global warming. He denies that there is any border crisis, despite the stalking and murder of Bambi Larson by
When speaking of America today, Beto says that the “challenges have never been greater” and yet, he thinks there is absolutely no border crisis, claiming that the border has never been as safe and secure as it is now.
At that moment, I knew that I disagreed with Beto. And that’s the great thing about being in America. We can (at least for now) decide for ourselves on every candidate. But the left-wing media doesn’t want you to decide for yourself, and that’s why they focus all their energy on defaming conservative young people and personally attacking people who don’t agree with them.
Instead of reporting actual fact, the Left-wing media devotes itself to promoting people like Beto, as mediocre as they are, as stars and heroes. Beto seems like a nice guy, but his positions on these serious issues are simple regurgitations. He is malleable to the Leftist agenda because he lacks substance.
He claims to be all about the little guy, though he’s not one of the little guys. He’s not part of the hard-working middle-class. He’s married to an heiress.
He seems passionate about what he saying in a naive, kindergartner kind of way. The Leftist media is banking on the hope that the American people will see his good-intentioned idealism as a promise of
Beto dutifully calls global warming the “greatest crisis” we are facing. The media is banking on Betos likability and mediocrity to convince the American people that Beto will save us all from certain doom, ignoring the fact that his stance on immigration and climate change will actually cause more human suffering in the form of socialism.
Really, the Beto Obsession that’s been manufactured by the Left-wing media this week confirms one thing.
They think we’re idiots.
And maybe we’ve done a bad job of proving them wrong.
But we can, in fact, think for ourselves. The personal likability or charisma of a candidate cannot sway me on subjects a real policy. That’s like choosing a doctor because she has personal magnetism.
I don’t want publications like Vanity Fair, a lifestyle magazine, telling me what to think about politics. I want to have the freedom to think for myself, to choose my position on a candidate based on how his views are held up against factual information. We should all have that right. “Born to do this.”
Media Actively Opposes Trump
The left is undeniably attracted to Beto because his views regurgitate their agenda in opposing conservatism on every issue. More than that, Beto actively opposes Trump. He even orchestrated a protest against Trump’s wall in El Paso at the same time Trump was going to be there to promote it.
Beto sticks to the leftist script on global warming and open borders.
The left would not be satisfied with the Democratic candidate who simply had different views from Trump’s. They want to promote icons who will oppose Trump as a person and confirm their notion that the president is a horrible, racist, bigoted individual who is a stain to our nation.
Vanity Fair should be a lifestyle magazine that speaks only of fashion, style, and travel. But because it is run by the Left, it contributes to the political misinformation by featuring only public figures who are liberal.
There’s no doubt that Trump was and continues to be controversial, but people agreed with his policy and appreciated that he stood for something.
Millennials are known for loathing inauthenticity, but somehow many remain oblivious to the inauthenticity of the Left. The Beto Obsession serves as proof of their abuse of power and their determination to misinform my generation.
Media Seeks Icons, Not Leaders
If there is anything the Leftist media knows about our culture, it’s that we love people who are awkwardly likable. People who have a certain coolness about them but are also a little different, and maybe even a little strange, like your best friend in middle school.
We want to be inspired by a person, but we also want to know they’re like us. We want to know we can relate to them. The Beto Obsession perpetuated by the Left stems from the fact that he has made to seem like a regular guy who also has some lovable quirks. Beto has a touch of coolness, but he’s also a little awkward. He’s likable because you feel you can relate to him.
The Beto Obsession, as perpetuated by the Leftist media, confirms their hypocrisy and shows that it’s only okay to be a rich white male if you’re a liberal.”
You like him the way you like your little brother or your funny cousin. The Left exploits Beto’s natural likability by asserting that he is just what America needs in 2020. That he is what we need instead of Trump. That he was “born for this.”
His image, as exemplified very well in the Vanity Fair spread, personifies the attributes that American citizens are conditioned to believe represent us. He’s a down-to-earth guy who likes Metallica and skateboarding.
And even better, he’s declared that he will dedicate himself to saving humanity from the coming doom. A savior. His boyish charm is a plus, too. The Beto Obsession comes down to the simple fact that Beto O’Rourke is marketable. They are creating a Beto brand that they hope will be a handy parallel to Obama’s charisma and likability 10 years ago.
Beto echoes the trendy optimism of our culture that we were all born for a specific purpose, that we must follow our passion, our “destiny” in life in order to be great. He says he was “made for this.”
These platitudes sound wonderful but don’t solve any problems. Beto is being marketed by the Left as the savior of the free world, but his words are dripping with egotism and tainted with white privilege. This should confirm the thought that he is an inauthentic pawn for the left.
